Skippy’s farewell session

This morning I had the honour of photographing beautiful Skippy. Nineteen years old, rescued at just 2, and loved with every ounce of his family’s hearts ever since.

For 17 years, Skippy has been a constant in their lives – always there, always part of the family. His family reached out because Skippy will be crossing the rainbow bridge in a couple of days. They wanted to capture him to have memories to treasure after he's gone.

We chose Pamphill for his session – a calm, beautiful location that felt just right for this special goodbye. The morning was quiet and peaceful, with soft light and space for Skippy to wander at his own pace. He thoroughly enjoyed the very generous supply of sausage snacks his family brought along, and took his time sniffing through the flowers and along the hedgerows.

This is the side of pet photography that isn’t always happy – but it’s real. It’s love in its most honest form.

It’s the wobbly smiles through tears, the whispered “good boy” into soft fur, and the wish to hold onto a moment before it slips away. Sessions like Skippy’s are never easy, but they are incredibly meaningful, and I feel so grateful to be trusted with them.

On Wednesday, Skippy will cross the rainbow bridge in the arms of the people who saved him all those years ago and gave him the most wonderful second life. I’ll be thinking of him often, and I hope these photographs bring his family comfort for many years to come.
